Day 10 and this is where we are at. Miguel has gotten the shiplap on the the walls and front of the kitchen bar. There are a couple of shelves on the one wall (had to have a place to get these dishes outta the boxes. The new butcher block counters are down with this awesome cast-iron sink and professional faucet. We treated the countertop with John Boos Block Mystery Oil and Board Wax. We have tried many different products and let me tell you this one is by far the best product I’ve used. Hung up a light over the sink and things are really coming together. Miguel also covered up the pantry door with fence pickets to make it look like a barn door and it’s awesome a temporary fix on the cheep until I make my mind up about a French door . This is also the day that the new appliances are coming thank you Jesus! I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!! IM SO EXCITED!!!!!!
Miguel decides at this point it is time to get on it building the new vent hood. It is an emergency at this point because that has to be up before he can cut and put up the shelves on the back wall. In the first faux house the vent hood tapered out from the ceiling down to the bottom. We had less room with the new kitchen so we wanted to keep this one from flaring out too much. He is still going to make it out of fence pickets for the look and the keep cost down. I just trust that theheatheredhandyman will come up something awesome as per usual.
I can tell you that there were some improvements on this one from the first version. On the first one, Miguel moved the cupboard over the microwave up and cut it shorter so the vent hood would fit. This time he used some metal brackets from Amazon to mount on the top of the microwave. The brackets were similar to the ones that they sell at Hobby Lobby but they are half the price and stronger, Another difference that this microwave is venting out of the house so there was no consideration for that. So it took a couple of days of engineering and building plus some interruptions to get the new appliances installed. On Day 13 in 2.0 the kitchen is almost acceptable but now I have to paint the cupboards UUGH!!! Miguel does almost everything super well but finish painting is not his forte’ so I do that.

Yes, this is day 13 and the new vent hood is up and in place and it is AMAZING!!! It is a bit tight around the microwave but it works. As you can see the kitchen is getting there but a dumpster fire of a mess. I am painting the cupboards white they needed something they were Hideously ugly. This is one place that I never skimp. To paint cabinets or furniture I always use Old Century Colors paint. In this case it farmhouse white (go figure). It is not cheap but it finishes awesome and is really durable. I put it on with Wooster Foam King Brushes and a small foam roller. These are the best brushes. No brush marks and unlike other foam brushes they do not fall apart. Again, not cheap but reasonable on Amazon. If you look on the front of the bar the handle and hinges for the door to the extra storage space that we created also doubles as a great storage for seasonal items and crock pots its like a Narnia closet down there .
Miguel cannot go any further on the kitchen without the cabinets being done, and hand to god I’m exhausted at this point new house new job I’m over it people but I plow ahead as usual. The first coat is on and waiting a couple days to dry for the second coat. After that the hardware needs to be attached and the new floor put down. So the hubs went in another direction to keep the progress on the new house going because he never stops the Energizer bunny. Sooo unbeknownst to me he just started getting rid of the soul sucking beige paint first on the living/dining room attached to the kitchen and then the family room.
So over the next week painting was happening at a fever pitch. We decided to use the same paint that we had in the first faux farmhouse. Behr Premium Plus interior satin Whisper White. It is just such a great color. We have tried a whole lot of of different paints over the years. No matter what there is always two coats if you want the richest color and durability. I hate painting and to be honest I thought that we were going to wait for a while. I did not realize how much the house needed to be painted until he started. Now he made a clean spot and the whole thing needs to be done. 35 gallons later its over he has no shoulder but we are getting a hot tub and it cant get here soon enough for this poor guys body!
We will leave this post right and there and the next post I will show you a few pictures of the kitchen. The kitchen did get some additions in between the paint and I am so proud of the way it looks now. Beams and more shiplap to come and some faux brick cause why not! going to try a wall of board and baton.
